I want to be Italiano

by Cathleen Schine on November 23, 2010

I was poking around trying to find places that sell Friulano wine here and somehow ended up on a blog called Students in Rome which had this video that apparently has been the ubiquitous pop song of the summer there:

Here’s the original, written to shame post-war poseurs back to their roots:

And here is what kept rattling unidentified around my brain until Janet said, “Sophia Loren sings that in a movie”:

Va va voom!

We No Speak Americano is actually one of my current favorite songs. I popped over to find a photo of you and was surprised to see that video on your home page. :-P

I am italian, I live in Friuli and I have a lot of bottles of Friulano wine in my kitchen…
Tonight I will drink to your health, reading your last good book,
Buona sera dall’Italia,

You might want to add this version to your list, from the Talented Mr Ripley:

My name is Silvana and I am writing from Genoa. I was just strolling around the web looking for some news about Your latest novel – It has been already translated into italian, I can therefore borrow it from the city library. First of all my warmest compliments on Your novels – I was literally charmed by the New Yorkers, so I’ve ended by searching the rest of Your works.
Sofia Loren sang “we no speak americano” in a famous and wonderful film made with Clark Gable called “It started in Naples” – La baia di Napoli (1960).
A presto!

you must be big in Italia. one of my italian designers, Nicoletta, found in your novel Miss S. ( italian title) how your unfortunate GG was found dead with only one shoe of his Ferragamo’s! Curious to know if the other half pair was somehow retrived and important in the development of this mistery! Could not find the title in english. I am the Director of Men’s Shoes and Accessories at Salvatore Ferragamo and seeing one of my shoes in trouble concerned me. Can you enlighten me?

Sadly, the other Ferragamo shoe has not yet been recovered. Sad, but never give up hope, Javier!!
