Oh…hello…

by Cathleen Schine on October 29, 2010

-I have not been very attentive, have I? Well, here is what I have been thinking of: Buster Posey. Of the Giants. Not because of what a good player he is, but because I love his name. It’s one of the best baseball names ever. Someone wrote about baseball names. I’m pretty sure it was Roy Blount.
-I am eagerly awaiting Roy’s new book on words, Alphabetter Juice. Alphabet Juice was sublime.
-I did not know Houdini was Jewish. Houdini was sublime, too, come to think of it.
-I am rereading Otto Friedrich’s sublime City of Nets. Sublime, I say.
-We leased a Mini Cooper S. The owners’ manual is incomprehensible and every time I tried to tune the radio to KCRW (sublime, one of the compensations for having to drive all the time) the car called one of two people in my contacts whose first name started with A. Sorry, Adam. Sorry, Aaron. But the car itself is sublime, and another compensation for having to drive .
-I will be in NYC soon! Here is picture I took of Grand Central Staion that I have been meaning to post for three months. No, make that four.

I just finished The Three Weissmanns of Westport, loving it entirely. I laughed out loud many times and weeped at the ending. You write like someone I’ve grown up – and old – with. Thank you.

Thank you so much!

Houdini’s real name, I believe, was Erich Sachs

No, Erik Weisz

Harry Houdini was born Erik Weisz.
Meanwhile, dear Cathleen, I must tell you that I recommended The Three Weissmanns to my mom, who also adored it. She announced as soon as she finished it, that she was re-reading it immediately – that is how much she enjoyed it!
You truly write as if you were a member of our functionally disfunctioning (on a daily basis) family! If you’re ever in the Philadelphia or Atlantic City area, you must come to dinner.
We’ll be reading your other books, also, thanx in advance!!!

I love City of Nets! It is my favorite book about Los Angeles.
