I was in Cleveland to speak at a lunch held by the Jewish Federation, which was great–they raise an awful lot of money for an awful lot of good causes–and I also drove through Cleveland Heights to visit a friend, which was also great–the houses there are big and brick and beautiful and my friend Joyce is so smart and fun and she has a bouncy lab and a dachshund that bosses it around–but i have to say the most breathtaking sight I saw in Cleveland was this fellow, an Irish deer hound (or is it a wolf hound?). He is 15 months old. He’s the size of shetland pony. I am in love.

Cleveland!

It’s either a Scottish Deerhound or an Irish Wolfhound. If you love these big guys, you should go to the Westminster dog show (February in NY). They have an open “backstage” area where you can admire and kiss dogs. Years ago, I fell in love with the deerhounds; they were hanging out on big wooden platforms, draped all over one another, too big for crates: an amazing sight that I’ve never forgotten.
Definitely an Irish Wolfhound. The Deerhounds are smaller and rangier. I have some shot of Wolfhounds coursing on/www.facesofdog.com in the Tally Ho! album.
