clean hands, clean minds

I have been teaching a creative writing class at Barnard, and the students are surprisingly good. I’ve read a lot of really good stuff. But I must admit that one of my favorite bits of prose is this sign that hangs in every bathroom in Barnard Hall. If this sign was in every restaurant instead of those dreary threatening ones about the health department and what it is always nagging us about, I think there would be a lot more delicious hand washing and a many fewer colds.

Well are they extra healthy or do they get sick as often as everyone else? Did you know that the two innovations in all of history that dramatically increased human life expectancy are antibiotics of course, and soap? That surprised me when I heard it. I hope you are surprised too.

I’m not surprised because your mother told me about a tribe somewhere that washed their hands in a river, but then they started using soap and finally stopped getting sick! Or something Marion-like along those lines. She knew everything.
